Just in time for Halloween, actor, director, playwright, Austin Chronicle arts writer, UMO graduate, and Maine native Barry Pineo will play the sole role in this blackly comic, very Irish tale about a theatre critic who favors whiskey, falls for a young actress, and ends up fetching victims for vampires.
ABOUT THE PLAY
On its face, St Nicholas is as uncomplicated as storytelling can be: A chair, a table, and a funny, yet failed and flawed, human being telling a story about a coven of vampires in modern day London. Despite its simplicity, or perhaps because of it, Conor McPherson’s award-winning play deeply delves into themes of love, family, relationships, parenthood, marriage, redemption, the nature of storytelling, and even the intricate fabric of reality itself, in a profoundly personal, challenging way that will leave you thinking and talking about it long after you leave.
Due to language and subject matter, for mature audiences only.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
Conor McPherson is among the world’s most revered playwrights. In 1996 he was writer in residency at the Bush Theatre, London, which commissioned St Nicholas, and where it was first performed by Brian Cox. St Nicholas also had an extended run Off-Broadway in 1998. McPherson won the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright award and London’s prestigious Olivier Award for The Weir, which had a long run on Broadway. Other plays include Shining City and The Seafarer, both of which were nominated for Tony Awards for Best Play; The Night Alive, which won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play; and Girl from the North Country, with Bob Dylan, for which McPherson was nominated for Tony Awards for Best Direction of a Musical and Best Book of a Musical. His newest play, The Brightening Air, opened in June 2025 at the Old Vic in London.
