A young woman named Joy is given a second chance at life when she receives a heart transplant, but, instead of relishing life after her surgery, Joy enters a downward spiral. At a friend’s urging, Joy tracks down the heart donor’s family to find closure and a tempestuous meeting ensues, resulting in a roller coaster of tears, laughter, letting go and finding new life.
Roles:
Joy, mid-20s to late 30s, a freelance graphic artist. Smart, sometimes acerbic, attractive but rudderless with her new heart and a new lease on life.
Jack, mid-30s, an accountant with aspirations of being a professional photographer. He is dead at the outset but appears throughout the show. Not a ghost, but more of a memory that lingers.
Hank, 60s. Husband of Alice and father to Sammy and Jack. He is pushing forward, trying very hard to not wallow in his grief and guilt.
Alice, 60’s. Wife of Hank and mother to Sammy and Jack. A solid, loving, enduring presence. She has a big heart that is dealing with its own pain while trying to hold the family together and do the right thing.
Sammy, around 30. A pre-school teacher and Jack’s younger sister. She’s somewhat “new-age-y” but with an enormous heart. She really wants to help in any way she can. She can give in too easily to her emotions but of everyone, she is the most in touch with them.
Nurse/Darla, 30s-60s. Nurse is very competent if a bit annoying. Has a small religious streak. Darla is somewhat flamboyant, artsy, very caring for Joy. She worries about and wants the best for her friend.
